Using the toilet in your vehicle can be a daunting task. I don’t recommend trying to use the toilet inside most SUVs as there just isn’t enough room. Here are the steps I would follow for using your portable toilet inside your minivan, along with some useful SUV camping accessories to enhance your experience.

- Sleep with your head towards the trunk.Â
- keep your portable bucket toilet underneath the extendable bed rails.
- When setting up the bed for the night, fully unfold the bed boards on one side but leave the last bed board folded up and push the bed supports back towards the trunk (see images).

Now place the mattress on top of this partially set up bed. The bed will still be flat and rigid because it is supported by the bed rails - If you need to use the toilet in the night, you can quickly just pull/fold back the one side of the mattress and push in the telescoping bed rail to expose the floor space at the foot of the bed where you can do your business.
Instead of a full mattress, consider putting two double mattresses side by side so you can fold back one side of the bed without waking up the other person.Â

VARIATION:
Instead of using the toilet on the floor of the minivan by the foot of the bed, you can slide the passenger side bucket seat backwards to fill that empty space and do your business on a toilet that sits on the passenger side bucket seat. This method may require you rethink your toilet design, but it will give additional privacy from the person sleeping in the trunk since you will have the back seat acting as a privacy curtain.
